Once you find your starting point and ending point on the maps in the book, you look at the corresponding square on the page opposite the map to see what bus lines run through the corresponding square. Once you find a bus route to connect your two points, you are almost done...

As an aside, if you take a closer look at the map, you'll notice how nicely the city is laid out on a grid and how predictable the addresses are. A map with this detail makes it very easy to figure out exactly where you are, or if you have an address, exactly where you want to go. And it fits conveniently in your pocket! (Sorry, if it isn't obvious yet, I'm a bit of a transit and map geek.)
